What to expect in your first session

Picture

The first session is a little like a first date. We need to get to know each other a bit in order to get a feel for what it might be like to work together.  While there needn't be a “perfect match”, I do want to make sure that my expertise matches your needs.

You need to feel that I can understand you, that my point of view and approach makes sense to you, and that you could be comfortable enough to tell me about your experiences, thoughts and feelings - even the things that are hard to talk about.

In your first session we will:
  • discuss the terms of treatment and confidentiality;
  • address any questions about my policies, scheduling, fees or insurance;
  • explore the concerns that have led you to seek therapy - while I tend to focus on the present, we’ll definitely talk about your history as well;
  • clarify your goals and outline treatment options – what you're hoping for and how we might get there.

You can expect an approach that is both practical and compassionate, and for your questions to be answered to the best of my ability. You can also expect a peaceful environment and a comfortable couch.

If I am unfamiliar with how to treat your particular concerns or if there just isn't a match, I’ll try to help you locate another psychologist or therapist who can.
